Description

Drivetrain and Wheels The Aethos Pro runs a Shimano Ultegra Di2 drivetrain, Roval Alpinist wheels with DT Swiss 350 hubs. Frame Design The Aethos frame was designed to create the perfect combination of ride quality, lightweight and style — so you can accelerate on steep climbs, descend the most technical descents, and stay comfortable even on long Sunday rides. But you're probably wondering, how did we do it? We re-invented the traditional road bike shape of the past, tweaking it to optimise stiffness and balance, without compromising weight or strength. The Aethos is more than a new bike — it's the beginning of a new generation. Ride Quality An ultra-light frame means nothing if the ride characteristics don't inspire confidence. That's why for the Aethos we looked for the perfect mix of front and rear stiffness in relation to ride quality. Aerodynamics Aerodynamics or light weight alone don't win races: what matters is speed. To achieve that speed you need an uncompromising combination of aerodynamics, light weight, stiffness and vibration absorption. Using complex simulations with real-world data, our Ride Science Team confirmed that the Tarmac SL8 is the fastest road bike on any course: – 16.6 seconds over 40 km of flat road, 128 seconds faster on the Milano-Sanremo course, 20 seconds faster up the Tourmalet. AERODYNAMICS We use aerodynamics where it matters most, and in the process we've created our fastest road bike ever — yes, even more aerodynamic than the Venge. The front end has been optimised for maximum advantage. The fork steerer is positioned further back relative to the front of the head tube to deliver significantly lower aerodynamic drag. Thanks to the new UCI rules, for the SL8 we were able to use the narrowest and most aerodynamic seatpost we've ever made, ensuring that the turbulent air in the leg zone can flow more easily towards the rear of the bike. LIGHTWEIGHT To build the Tarmac SL8 and make the most aerodynamic bike possible while meeting the UCI minimum weight requirements, we drew on everything we learned with the Aethos. The team built a 685-gram frame, 15% lighter than the Tarmac SL7 and lighter than any other bike in the World Tour*. By focusing on maximum weight savings in the down tube, seat tube and rear end of the bike, we applied the lessons learned during the Aethos project. The frame shapes respond so efficiently to stress loads that it was possible to reduce material thickness, cutting out everything that isn't needed. *Except for that time Kasper Asgreen raced on our 585-gram Aethos frame during a Tour stage. RIDE QUALITY The Tarmac SL8's stiffness-to-weight ratio is 33% better than the SL7. The Tarmac SL8 sets a new benchmark for handling: precise in the most demanding situations and immediately responsive to every pedal input. While the areas responsible for power transfer and handling precision are stiffer than ever, the Tarmac SL8 is more comfortable in the saddle, filtering 6% more road vibration and letting you attack corners with an agility and balance that's truly unique in the road bike world. The new Tarmac SL8 keeps the proven geometry of the SL7 model, with the same generous clearance for 32 mm tyres, so you can run a higher-volume tyre whenever you need it. BEYOND GENDER DIFFERENCES In reality there can be far greater differences between two male cyclists than between a man and a woman. We design for the individual and our philosophy is simple: don't create differences where there aren't any. Every cyclist, male or female, can take advantage of what the Tarmac SL8 has to offer. It's time to move beyond. The Tarmac SL8 Expert Di2 runs the Ultegra Di2 groupset, C38 carbon tubeless ready wheels, SL7 stem with Specialized Expert Shallow drop handlebar.
